art of twerking with the 20-year-old hit maker.
How personal is your latest hit single, Wrecking Ball? Were you ever afraid that the video’s boldness will overshadow the song?
I know people are so glued to the obvious, they’re not going beyond it and watching the actual emotions of the song in my eyes. I did the song with my friend (and artist) MoZella who was going through a crazy time in her life. It was like therapy for both of us, going through things that I didn’t remember had hurt me. That’s something everyone has felt, feeling really alone. I think people need to know that everyone’s been in that situation.
The news of your split (from fiancé Liam Hemsworth) shocked a lot of your fans. Do you think stardom comes in the way of relationships?
It does not necessarily; it depends on what every individual wants out of their life. And currently my focus is my career. I’m someone who cares about the real things in life. There are things that are personal that stress me out, but my career? That doesn’t affect me. I know I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
Twerking has been one of the most Googled words in the past few weeks. When you look back at your VMA performance, what do you think?
I still feel like getting up and twerking. It’s a new form; I love it and enjoy it!
As far as music goes, who inspires you?
My favourite person that I’ve gotten to have on my record is Britney Spears ... I’ve grown up watching her. The way fans think of me now, that was me with her when I was a kid. All I wanted to do was go see her concerts. Every time she was on TV and anything she did I wanted to learn … to have her on the record is really having my idol on the record!
How has the transition been from being a child star (at the time of Hannah Montana) to having a more mature image? Did you ever think your audiences might not be able to accept you in a changed avatar?
For that, I’ve always been really inspired by Mary-Kate and Ashley (Olsen) because I feel like they’ve been able to do the best kind of transition possible. They took up something that wasn’t necessarily their original dream and grew to be on the level of such high fashion.
Tell us about your new album, Bangerz (and the idea behind its name!)
There is no reason behind it. Once you hear the entire album, you will know exactly why it’s called Bangerz. I wanted people to know what they were listening to. The album is all singles, all #1s. That’s what we’re hoping for. Your word is your wand. I’m a big believer in that. I thought I might as well title my record that and put it out there.
From your flowing locks to your super sexy pixie! Do you ever miss your long hair?
After my show Hannah Montana ended, I just wanted to have an image of my own, hence the wild transformation.
This seems like a big transition period for you. What do you expect from the future?
Hopefully, I will be touring all over the world! I have been around the world on everyone’s TV for my whole life but I haven’t been able to visit half the places where people know me the most.
Your Indian fans would love to see you perform in the country. Should we expect a visit from you soon?
I know my largest fans are in Asia, would love to travel to meet them all.
