Aiming to provide city musicians with a platform to interact with big names from the music industry, the Red Bull Music Academy hosted a unique workshop that was attended by a motley crowd of artistes and audiophiles. Bollywood composer and Pentagram frontman Vishal Dadlani shared insights on the topic of the meeting: ‘Changing Sounds of Bollywood’, besides recounting his journey from being in an indie-band to making it big in Bollywood.
“I’ve learnt music entirely from the people I’ve met. It’s crucial for the development of every musician to meet other musicians and learn from them. The confidence to contribute ideas to people you look up to can only come by meeting them,” said Vishal, who encouraged the attendees to apply to the Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA), a one-of-a-kind school where musicians from across the world spend two weeks engaging and collaborating with each other, besides getting the chance to be guided by veterans.
Giving a glimpse into what happens at the academy, music producer Just Blaze, who’s produced songs for artistes like JayZ and Eminem joined Vishal on stage. They performed a track they had worked on a few hours previously — one that featured Punjabi lyrics, traditional Marathi folk drums and a hip-hop groove. Besides this collaborative composition, Vishal also guided the attendes through the different layers of working on the item song, Sheila ki jawaani.., from the folk percussions to the hip-hop bass and synth sounds.
“I’ve used Bollywood music extensively and I think this genre has the potential to cut into the global mainstream. The energy and passion you see when these artistes from across the world are putting each others’ tunes and words together, is nothing short of fabulous,” said Just Blaze. RBMA founder, Torsten Schmidt added, “When the first edition opened in Berlin in 1998, it was a daring and unheard of programme. Despite its 15 year-history, we’ve barely scratched the surface so far.”
Kolkata-based drummer Jivraj Singh, who attended RBMA last year at Madrid, also performed at the workshop and spoke about his experience in Spain. He said, “After spending two weeks in an environment where music as an art is respected, it was difficult to get back to reality back home!”
