They don’t confine themselves to any particular genre and neither do they know the meaning of their band’s name — Plok. Here’s what Anirudh Subramaniam, the band’s guitarist, has to say:

What sort of music can we expect from you?
We don’t like to confine ourselves to a particular genre. All in all, our music has influences of alternative, progressive metal with a sprinkle of funk, electro and even pop.

PlokHow did the band come together?
Having made music for over 10 years, one day we (Neeraj, Anirudh and the drummer) picked up a guitar and started plucking an undeniably ‘pop’ riff. We then moved to recruiting the brightest musical talent in the city — Tushar, Yugank and Avo — to create fresh sounds.

Why this name?
We did not ransack the dictionary, use emo band-name generators or crowd-source the name ‘Plok’. In fact, Plok is not even a word! The basic premise of the band is that stereotyping is forbidden.

What do people remember the most about your gigs?
We’ve been fortunate when it comes to turn-out and crowd response. We’ve heard people talk about our on-stage energy and what really sticks out are the Plok originals.

Has the music scene in Delhi changed over the years?
The music scene in Delhi, to say the least, is extremely encouraging. There are so many bands coming up by the day, people are experimenting with different styles and making original music.

What, according to you, has been the inspiring song, event and artist for the band?
I don’t think there is any particular event or song that has inspired us. We love to make music and play it for our audience.

Do you guys enjoy performing in Delhi? Why?
Delhi is definitely a great place to play. Being our home-town, we have our largest support-base here.

Which is the best place in Delhi to create music?
We don’t really have a favourite... we usually make music at a jam-pad in Lajpat Nagar, Anirudh’s home-studio or in our respective bedrooms.

What has been the best moment for the band?
There’s no one moment that we can call the best, but we’ve had a great start. We got an overwhelming response in the first couple of years of playing live. We’re now very optimistic about our debut album which is due in August this year.

As told to Vaishali Bhambri
