Artistes often work towards social causes — be it fund raising concerts for an illness or a campaign for the education of rural children. Popular percussionist Taufiq Qureshi and singer Bonnie Chakraborty will be part of a concert in the city on November 23 to support a five day-long national campaign organised by the NGO Child Rights and You (CRY). “We want to reach out to people and there cannot be a better way than having a music concert. The concert will be a lot more than entertainment,” says Kreeanne Rabadi, regional director West, CRY.

The concert will be held on the third day of the campaign, ‘Child In You’, which focuses on children’s right to education. Qureshi, who is a frequent contributor to initiatives for social causes, will convey a dual message to the audiences. “I’m honoured to be part of such a fraternity, which is empowered enough to gather people,” says Qureshi. With his band, Mumbai Stamp, Qureshi will perform with trash material. “We don’t have any special instruments for our performance. My band performs with trash, like tin cans, buckets, beer barrels, and empty paint containers. Our idea is to convey the message that music can be produced out of anything,” he says.

Chakraborty, who is known for his Kolkata-based band Krosswindz and songs in films Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Dev D (2009) and No One Killed Jessica (2010), will perform with his wife at the concert.

“My wife (Usri Banerjee) and I will be presenting a few Bengali and Hindi folk songs. We have composed a special song for CRY, as well,” says Chakraborty.

Catch Taufiq Qureshi with his band Mumbai Stamp and Bonnie Chakraborty on November 23 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Carter Road, Bandra (W)
