Fresh and well-known names from the Indian classical music circuit have come together for a three-day Hindustani music concert in the city, called Kanth-Swar Utsav.

The concert, which began yesterday with performances by singers Suchismita Das and Prasad Khaparde, was well received by the
audiences. Today’s show will be led by vocalists Ramakant Gaikwad and Shashwati Mandal, while the final day will see Sayali Talwalkar and Sanjeev Chimmalgi on stage.

“This is a platform for young upcoming artistes to showcase their talent. I will be presenting raga jogkauns and raga basanti kedar, the two ragas that were close to my guru, Pandit C R Vyas,” says Chimmalgi. The artiste insists that her set will be a blend of two contrasting notes. “It will be challenging. But I’m looking forward to it,” she adds.

Talwalkar, known for genres like abhangwani, semi classical and Hindustani classical, will also be presenting some bhajans, besides traditional ragas. “I will commence with ragas like sandhi prakash, shree and durga and finish with the nirguni bhajan,” says Talwalkar, adding, “All the performers belong to different gharanas (schools of music) and I’m sure it’ll be a treat for music lovers.”

Kanth-Swar Utsav has been organised by P L Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, the government of Maharashtra’s popular cultural academy, in collaboration with Pancham Nishad.

The concert is on till February 14 at the Mini Theatre, 3rd floor, P L Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, Prabhadevi, from 6.30 pm onwards. Entry is free. Call 2431 2956/2412 4750 for more details.
