Fans of Zakir Hussain are in for a treat as the celebrated tabla player will perform at two consecutive concerts in the city. Both the shows are dedicated to special causes. The first concert on July 21 will remember tabla maestro Shafaat Ahmed Khan. The other, on July 22, will be held on the occasion of Guru Purnima, where Hussain along with his brother Fazal Qureshi will pay tribute to their father and guru, Ustad Alla Rakha Khan.
On July 22, two tabla players will spearhead the Guru Purnima concert, which will also be a rare opportunity for young students from the Punjab gharana (music school) to share the stage with Hussain, along with their gurus. These artistes are coming down to Mumbai from Jalandhar for this event. The show will also feature a few students from the music institute named after Ustad Alla Rakha.
Talking about the concert, Qureshi says, “This concert is our homage to our father and guru. Guru Purnima is the perfect occasion to keep in touch with our past culture and heritage, and to express our gratitude to our source of learning.” The concert will also feature father-son duo, Ajay Pohankar (Indian classical vocalist) and Abhijeet Pohankar (classical instrumentalist).
The show held today (July 21) by Hussain will commence with a vocal recital by Aparna Kelkar, followed by a performance by Hussain in the second half. “I have learnt a lot from Shaafat bhai and I am glad I have been roped in for a recital. This will be the first time that I’ll be performing with the legendary tabla player, Zakir Hussain,” says Kelkar. The accompanying artistes will be Ajinkya Joshi (tabla), Milind Kulkarni and Ajay Joglekar (harmonium).
