During these times of troubled economy, the talk of custom-made luxury may sound like a distant dream. But as Indians, we can pride ourselves as being the lucky recipients of a wonderful legacy where getting a little something custom-made for ourselves may not necessarily mean breaking the bank. Unlike in the West, where the very thought of custom-made is synonymous with couture and is a luxury only the rich and famous can indulge in, the traditional craftsmanship of Indian workers has always assured that we are not devoid of a made-to-order item every once in a while.
So while a bespoke suit cut and made by hand in London’s Savile Row may cost upwards of 2000 pounds (Rs 2 lakhs approx) or a handmade fine leather shoe in Italy’s famous San Mauro Pascoli area, is a hedonism fit for a red carpet outing, in India the story can be different.
Aditya Singhal, CEO, IML Jeans which does bespoke jeans for women says, “While many reason that cheap labour is a major factor for affordable luxury in India I think it’s more about the availability of skilled labour, which acts as plus point.”
And with the coming up of experiential consumerism in India, now many people are launching thoughtful little ventures such as making soaps or candles that can be individualised. Shikha Chugh, psychologist says, “These little signature style mementos go on to add that feel-good factor to the whole experience, and that’s why sometimes you don’t mind going a little extra for a perfume that bottles up your favourite fragrance.”
