After the success of Kahaani (2012), there was news that director Sujoy Ghosh was planning to make a Bengali movie with Prosenjit Chatterjee and Vidya Balan.
Quiz Prosenjit on that and he retorts, “It’s not a rumour, Sujoy has approached me for a Bangla movie with Vidya. We haven’t got down to the details yet. It could be a comedy or a drama, the subject has to be right. That’s Sujoy’s headache!”
Various Bengali actors were cast in Kahaani, but Prosenjit was not one of them. However, he points out, the film started from his hometown, Kolkata, and put the spotlight on many Tollywood actors like Parambrata Chatterjee (who played the role of the cop, Rana) and Saswata Chatterjee (who essayed the part of the hired assassin, Bob Biswas). “I feel so proud to see their popularity extending beyond Bengal. The success of Kahaani in Hindi, and Autograph (2010), Moner Manush (2010), and Baishe Srabon (2011) (Prosenjit’s recent films) in Bengali proves that cinema is changing.”
Vidya made her Bollywood debut as Sarat Chandra Chatterjee’s Lolita in Pradeep Sarkar’s Parineeta (2005). And in an earlier interview, she had admitted that she’d love to “do classic Tagore (sic)”. “It would be great to act in another period film. Not a remake of a classic, but something that delves into the man-woman relationship; maybe one on an extra-marital affair,” she had said, smiling.
Vidya acted in a Bengali film, Bhalo Theko in 2003. Will she do a second for Sujoy?
