While movies may suggest public display of affection (PDA) helps in winning a woman’s heart, the same may not hold true in real life, according to a recently-conducted study.

The British study advises people to select the location for PDA carefully, since sweeping your other half off her feet
in the middle of the street, restaurant or shopping mall may backfire.

The survey of 2,000 people also found that 28% were uncomfortable around other couples’ PDA. Interestingly, dismissing popular belief that PDA is no big deal in the West, over a quarter of British girls said that they were too embarrassed to even hold hands in public, and one in 10 women would consider breaking up with a man who was too touchy-feely in a public place.

Back home, young people have mixed sentiments about it. 26-year-old banker Rashi Malhotra says that both she and her fiance hate PDA, and is comfortable getting intimate only in their own private space.

Psychologist Niranjan Reddy feels that it’s a relative thing. “Indians are basically conservative, so judge your partner’s comfort level, else things might turn embarrassing for him or her, which can spoil your relationship,” says Reddy.
