On October 11, Freida Pinto will indulge in a charitable act. The actor, who has been associated with a global charity firm’s campaign for the girl child, will help illuminate the Empire State Building (in New York) turn pink, on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child.

“Lighting up monuments in pink is a symbolic gesture by the charity organisation to spread awareness about the cause of the girl child. This will be the first time that an actor of Indian origin would be given such an honour,” says an insider close to Frieda. As a part of the initiative, she has visited various charity firms across Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Egypt and India to work towards finding solutions in each country that hinders development of girls.
Meanwhile, Freida will have another connection with the day in the form of her recent documentary, Girl Rising, with Priyanka Chopra. The docu-drama will be screened in Philippines. Besides the two, other celebrities who have lent their voices to the docu film are Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Salma Hayek and Meryl Streep, among others. It documents extraordinary stories focusing on the girls from nine countries, including India.
Sonam Kapoor joins veterans Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar to raise funds for cancer patients
Sonam Kapoor, who had so far been silently spreading awareness about cancer, will now actively raise funds for unprivileged patients. “Sonam joins hands with Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar to be a part of their cause — a cancer charity” says a source close to the actor.
Azmi and Akhtar are close family friends of the Kapoors. When Sonam came to know about their initiative through her dad, Anil Kapoor, she expressed her wish to indulge in charity along with the duo. The event will be an auction of impressive handicrafts inspired by Indian cinema. “The auction will also see actors sharing anecdotes on the 100 years of cinema,” says the source.
Sonam has been supporting the cause for cancer patients since 2009.
“She has always been keen on spreading cancer awareness and help people in need, but she never publicises the same. Sonam likes to be quiet about this endeavour,” says the source.
When contacted, Sonam confirms the development.
“I am glad to contribute and create awareness of a cause that is close to me,” she said.
