Former VJ Sophiya Haque passes away

British Asian VJ and actress Sophiya Haque passed away this morning. It has been reported that the model died of cancer in London. 

Sophiya Haque's partner David White confirmed that she died on Wednesday and she was diagnosed with cancer several weeks ago, The Guardian reports.

Sophiya had been starring as Sylvia in Privates on Parade in the West End of London, directed by Michael Grandage, and co-starring Simon Russell Beale. She also played Poppy in Coronation Street, had a role alongside Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy in the 2008 film Wanted, and was a DJ on BBC Asian Network, reports the daily.

Sophia Haque rose to fame in 1990s as a VJ/host and a cadbury advertisement.

About Sophiya Haque
Sophiya Haque was an actress, singer and former MTV Asia VJ. She was very popular for her VJing in India.

Sophiya first taste of success came as a singer when her band, Akasa, signed a deal with Warner Bros in 1988. Subsequently she worked as a VJ for MTV for seven years and Channel V, and achieving popularity in South Asia in the 1990s as one of the first generation of VJs on the region's then-emerging cable television scene.

She was the first VJ in India to achieve stardom and took roles in Bollywood movies. By 1997 she had moved to Mumbai in 1997 to try her luck in Bollywood with moderate sucess and also featured in a Cadbury's commercial which became very popular.

After moving back to London in 2002 to act in theatre she went on to appear as the barmaid, Poppy Morales, and subsequently taking the role of assistant manageress in the long running TV series Coronation Street from December 2008 until June 2009. She also appeared in BBC's Fairy Tales series. She was diagnosed with cancer she was working in the Michael Grandage production of Privates on Parade.
