Amillion hearts just broke, and why wouldn’t they? India’s most eligible bachelor, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, just announced that he doesn’t intend to marry. The 42-year-old’s explanation to it: “If I get married and have children, I will be status quoist and would like my
children to take my place.”

Ever since, social media has been buzzing with comments, jokes and dejection from young women who adore him.

“#RahulGandhi’s refusal to get married is the ultimate insult to women world wide!,” wrote Ashok Garekar @DrGarekar on Twitter.  “Dear Rahul Gandhi, challenge accepted. Respectfully, @ShaadiDotCom,” tweeted @MasalaBai. Facebook fan groups for Gandhi have also been overactive with reactions. “Jai ho.......bt rahulji should consider marriage positively.......God bless (sic),” wrote Naveen Rangorath on one of his many fan-pages.

“He has all the power and prestige every girl wishes for. So I just don’t understand why he has to give this fancy ‘in the country’s interest’ funda when he can be successful even if he has a wife! C’mon Rahul, don’t be scared of marriage!” says Ruchi Jha, 27. “He is the most eligible bachelor and so good looking. Why would he say that? I request Rahul Gandhi to reconsider his decision. Pleaseeeeee,” says Priyanka Sharma, 25.

While many suspect that a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar may already be underway, others are poking jokes and insisting it’s not a big deal after all.  “So, Rahul Gandhi has decided not to marry. That means, he will listen to only one woman instead of two in his entire life,” wrote Valay @Valayism. “The nation is so obsessed with getting Rahul Gandhi & Salman Khan married!” wrote @namratagogoi.
