On Friday, (August 9) filmmaker David Dhawan, who usually doesn’t celebrate his birthday, turned 54. And this year, to make things special for him, his family, including wife Karuna and son Varun put together a special dinner party at their Juhu home. The invitees included a handful of David’s close pals like Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, writer Rumi Jaffery and brother Anil Dhawan among others.

“David’s wife planned everything. For his last six-seven birthdays, he was working. But this year, an intimate dinner was planned. And David was also happy to connect with his old pals, since all of them are generally busy with their careers,” says an insider close to the family.

VarunInterestingly, even as Dhawan Sr’s pals made their way to the party, Varun didn’t invite any of his friends. “The party was for David’s friends. So Varun only helped around in terms of organising the dinner and taking care of the guests, along with his mother,” adds the insider.

When contacted, Varun says with a laugh, “I was the waiter at dad’s party, who was serving people. The dinner was very intimate and exclusively for a few of my father’s close friends. He generally doesn’t like big celebrations on his birthday. But this time, we made him say yes. We had a great time.”
