No cheer for hockey heroes

The Indian hockey team may be on the verge of winning the ongoing Asia Cup and securing a berth in the World Cup, but unlike the hullabaloo over cricket milestones, all’s quiet on the social media front.

After defeating hosts Malaysia in the semi-final, the team has not only made it to the finals against South Korea today, but also almost made it to the World Cup that will be held in the Netherlands next year. What adds to the victory is that arch-rivals Pakistan have failed to qualify for the event for the first time in history.

While social media was flooded with greetings for the U-23 cricket team that defeated Pakistan to win a prestigious tournament recently, the response to the hockey team’s performance is negligible. Barring a few tweets and 100 odd Facebook posts from diehard fans, such as “Chak De!” by a fan, Vinod Jadhav, there’s nothing much.

“Due credit should be given, but at the same time, they need to be consistent and should perform well at bigger platforms,” says Raman Bhanot, sports commentator.
