The Capital witnessed a clash of the desi Titans on Saturday, albeit a fun one.
The Indian cricket team was pitted against top film and TV actors at a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for a charity football match, and the sportstars beat the screen stars 4-3. Led by their captain Abhishek Bachchan and vice-captain Ranbir Kapoor, the All Stars team was determined to prove a point as they were seen practising before their opponents.
After their session, it was the turn of the other team, All Heart (named after Virat Kohli’s foundation), to get warmed up. Virat was the captain on the other side. With Baichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri as coaches of All Stars and All Heart respectively, the two teams came on the field and the much awaited game began at 8pm.
It was Kohli’s team that scored the first goal. Within minutes, an equaliser was scored by actor Shabbir Ahluwalia, bringing the intense game at par. But, it was cricketer Manoj Tiwari who scored two goals in quick succession, and that set the pace for their win.
By the end of the first half, the cricketers were up with a score of 3-1 and as soon as the second half began, Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored a goal. The actors finally went down. The winners, cheered on by Dhoni’s wife Sakshi, performed a small jig to Gangnam Style and were joined by everyone around.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was abuzz with starry activity on Saturday, as cricket players competed with film actors in a football match organised to raise money for underprivileged children.
On the field were the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ishant Sharma among the boys who bat and bowl. On the other side were small screen and big screen heroes Ranbir Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Dino Morea, Karan Wahi, entrepreneur Raj Kundra and model-turned-choreographer Marc Robinson, among others. The event, hosted by the Magic Bus Foundation, saw the fans going into fits of fun.
