Some TV shows are just for entertainment, while others are mirrors of our society. Falling in the second category, Phir Subah Hogi, highlights exploitation of women in India’s regressive rural societies. We caught up with the show’s lead actors — Narayani Shastri and Varun Badola, who claim that the show is different from other TV shows, and tell us how.
Based on the Bedia tribe of Bundelkhand region, Madhya Pradesh, which is known for their Raai dance, the show will air on Zee TV later this month. It attempts to bring into light how girls born in the Bedia family are forced to serve rich Thakurs and are exploited by them.
Talking about her character in the show, Narayani, who has been part of TV shows such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Piya Ka Ghar and Kkusum, says, “I play the role of Gulabia, a Raai dancer, who gets caught in the whirlpool of societal norms, on one hand, and her daughter who wants to break free from all customs, on the other. It is full of emotions.”
She further adds, “It’s a story of finding hope in difficult situations. It feels great to be associated with this show as it brings to the fore the heinous crime of exploiting women in the name of customs and rituals.”
Describing his character, actor Varun, who will be seen as a flamboyant Thakur, Vikram Singh, says, “Vikram is a larger-than-life character in his village, who does not take no for an answer. He is a philanderer; women are his weakness.” Varun adds, “The show is not a period drama. I was amazed to know that such customs are still prevalent in our country.”
On being asked whether the two actors would want to be part of reality TV shows, Varun says, “There are hardly any reality shows. I have been called more than once for Bigg Boss, but I have declined the offers, as I feel that the damage it does to you is very
difficult to control.”
Giving her opinion on the same, Narayani says, “Where are the reality shows? You will never see me in a show like Bigg Boss. I am happy being far from it.”
