The weather gods have been kind to Mumbai this winter. But Thursday night sent the mercury zooming up the thermometer, when the hottest people from the city turned up to celebrate the Hindustan Times Mumbai’s Most Stylish Awards 2013. As designer Manish Malhotra, a member of the jury who worked with HT Cafe to pick the 20 most stylish people in the city said, “This room is the most stylish place in the world tonight.” And nobody could have disagreed with him.
Although Shahid Kapoor came in straight from his shoot (of Phata Poster Nikla Hero), he looked nothing less than dapper in a Kunal Rawal suit. The Bachchan men, as always, looked dashing — and arrived bang on time. Akshay Kumar, who had been in Dubai for the past few days, looked classy in an Arjun Khanna jacket.
At the exclusive sit-down do (nothing formal about it, given the fun the winners and award presenters were having), Amitabh Bachchan received the Timeless Style Icon award, and Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor were presented with the Tata Manza Readers Choice awards.

And the winners are...
the city’s most glamorous took a walk down the red carpet for the hindustan times Mumbai’s most stylish 2013 awards
The Hindustan Times Mumbai’s Most Stylish Awards, which were held on Thursday evening, was high on the glam quotient, to say the least. From Amitabh Bachchan, to Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and restaurateur Nikhil Chib, everyone made an appearance looking their best.
Bachchan, reminiscing about the good old days, said, “In a lot of earlier films, we didn’t have stylists; we just wore our own clothes. In Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films, we’d ask him what we were to wear and he’d just say ‘Whatever you’re wearing is fine’.”
Like his father, Abhishek Bachchan who spoke about his style in his last release, Bol Bachchan, joked that all his rather loud clothes for the movie were taken from Rohit Shetty’s eclectic wardrobe.
Shilpa Shetty admitted that getting this award was a huge deal for her. She said, “For someone who came from a middle class family in Chembur and didn’t know anything about fashion, I take this award as a compliment.”
Sonam Kapoor looked like the ultimate diva in her black gown. Lucky HT Café reader Sudhanshu Mishra, who presented the award to her, while talking about his own style, said, “It’s not just about clothes, but also your personality, your character.”
Sridevi, who was surprised, yet thrilled, to receive the award, was overwhelmed while speaking on stage. She said, “It feels good to know your personal sense of style is appreciated.”
The evening wasn’t only about film stars though. Restaurateur Nikhil Chib, socialite Natasha Poonawalla and model Freddy Daruwalla also walked off the stage with awards of their own.
Take a look.
The dapper actor made heads turn in his Arjun Khanna jacket, Dolce and Gabbana trousers and Yves Saint Laurent shirt. A Louis Vuitton belt and polka-dotted pocket square added the finishing touches. Akshay was also our Tata Manza Reader’s Choice award winner (male). When he accepted his award from the sari-clad Vidya Balan, he thanked his wife Twinkle for helping him with his sartorial choices.
Sonam was jaw-dropping in her Elie Saab gown. An unusual pair of earrings by Nitya Arora showed why she is a true fashionista. The actor has a range of style icons. “They include Maharani Indira Devi of Cooch Behar, Gayatri Devi, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Kate Moss, Coco Chanel, Greta Garbo and Grace Kelly,” she says. Sonam received her award from HT’s Tata Manza Reader’s Choice winner, Sudhanshu Mishra.
Timeless Style Icon: Amitabh Bachchan
Expectedly, the paparazzi went crazy when Big B arrived in his black suit. Inside, he received his Timeless Style Icon award from son Abhishek Bachchan. When we asked Bachchan to name his style icon, he humbly said, “My mother was the most beautiful woman in the world, and she had all that goes into fashion and style. I guess living in her illustrious shadow could have given me a sense of what was suited to me.”
Sridevi looked like a million bucks in her oxblood dress. Her daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi, looked lovely too. The actor admits that her elder daughter makes all her fashion-related decisions. “Jhanvi is my style icon,” she said proudly, as the young lady, clad in Catherine Malandrino, looked on. Imran Khan, expectedly dapper in his Tom Ford suit, yellow socks peeping under his trousers, presented Sri with her award.
When we asked Anil Kapoor what he was wearing, he cheekily proclaimed, “Dolce and Gabbana. Naam toh suna hai na?” Before we could respond, he was smiling for the shutterbugs, showing off his coordinated polka dotted tie and pocket square. Anil claims that Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling is his style icon. Dia Mirza, who was radiant in a Catherine Malandrino gown, presented him with the award at the event.
There’s no denying that Vidya looked stunning in her Sabyasachi sari. Her striking Amrapali necklace stood out. “The traditional Indian woman is my style icon,” says the actor. “Every region has different colours, hues and intensity, and the way they incorporate it is interesting.” Vidya received her award from another traditionally dressed icon, Hema Malini, who wore a cheery yellow sari.
Abhishek received his award from the glamorous Zeenat Aman, who sparkled in an embellished tunic. Junior B, who arrived with father Amitabh Bachchan, wore a bright blue velvet blazer over his white shirt, studded with diamonds. In an interview, Abhishek said his father was his style icon. Further down the red carpet too, he was asked the same question, to which he replied, “He’s standing next to me.”
The actor was happy to admit that her one-shoulder dress was by the not-so-well-known designer Pravit. In her Jimmy Choo heels, she was a vision on the red carpet. Shilpa got her award from Madhur Bhandarkar, who wore a dark blue Rohit Kamra jacket. Her style inspirations are varied. “My mother and Sienna Miller are my icons. From Bollywood, it’s Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan,” she said.
Shahid Kapoor sparked off a frenzy on the red carpet. He paired his grey blazer with brown pants, an ensemble that he credited to designer-stylist friend Kunal Rawal, who he also credits as his style icon. He also posed patiently for pictures with actor Jacqueline Fernandez, who arrived minutes after him. The latter, who looked striking in her pink Pernia Qureshi gown, also presented him with his award.
Rohit, arguably at ease in his kurta and achkan, smiled for the cameras. “I’m wearing a design by Navin Shetty, my brother-in-law. I only wear his stuff,” he says. Rohit received his award from Boney Kapoor and Sonali Bendre, who looked lovely in her Payal Khandwala ensemble. “My style icons are Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan. They dress in basics, but carry them off well,” said Rohit.
Chitrangda was radiant in her Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna dress. The actor confesses to being a huge fan of Anant Kabra and Tarun Tahiliani. She also loves Victoria Beckham’s clothing line. She spoke to us about her style icons, saying, “I love the ’60s and ’70s, so I admire Jacqueline Kennedy.” The actor received her award from Aditi Rao Hydari, who wore a green Gaurav Gupta dress.
Natasha was stunning in her edgy Azzedine Alaia creation. She received her award from Chhaya Momaya, who wore an elegant David Meister gown. Struggling to describe her style sense and inspiration, she said, “I love Queen Rania for her elegance and understated sense of style, Kate Moss and even some craziness of Lady Gaga. But I don’t think I could dress like any of them. Style is very individual to me.”
As Nikhil Chib posed for pictures, his wife, Natasha, told us of his surprise at being declared a winner. “I pick out all his clothes, so I think I deserve this award,” she laughed, describing his Govinda Mehta suit, Ferragamo shoes, Canali belt and Zara tie. Nikhil, on his part, named Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cary Grant as his style icons. He received his award from another stalwart from the culinary scene, Farhan Azmi.
The leggy model came in a Pankaj and Nidhi dress, her hair tied back in a chic bun and skin visibly glowing. Bollywood baddie Gulshan Grover, in a checked shirt that stood out beneath his blazer, presented her with the award. When asked about her personal style, Angela said she loves her jeans and T-shirts. And who is her style icon? “Audrey Hepburn. She embodied class,” said the model.
Music composer Sneha Khanwalkar walked in looking completely unique, yet blending in seamlessly. The sleeves of her blazer had leather, while her bag was uber cute. Not surprisingly, she tells us that her style icon is Liza Minnelli, especially in the musical, Cabaret. Sneha received her award from Mandira Bedi, who wore a bright sari. “It’s my own creation. I’m turning designer,” gushed Mandira.
The model walked in looking stately in his grey Sanjay Hingu two-piece suit. Freddy’s choice of style icons took us a little by surprise. “My personal favourites are Saif Ali Khan and Suniel Shetty. They carry themselves with élan,” he told us. Narendra Kumar Ahmed, one of last year’s winners, presented him with his award. Nari himself looked quite stylish in his own colourful design.
We wish they’d been there...
While most of our winners graced the occasion and came forth to collect their awards, some could not make it for unavoidable reasons. Designer Manish Malhotra accepted awards on behalf of his actor friends Priyanka Chopra and Karisma Kapoor. We wish that they, along with the other winners, Praful Patel, Kiran Rao and Ronit Roy had been there too.
