The decision of the Indian government to reduce the age for consensual sex to 16 while the legal age for marriage and watching an adult film remains 18, is making social media users roll in laughter.

“Minimum Age of Marriage is 18 & for Sex it is 16 !! 2 years for Net Practice,” wrote R Jain @des2videsh on Twitter. “Age of consent = 16. Age for voting = 18. Age for drinking = 21. This means you need to be more mature to drink than to make love or elect,” tweeted @Deb_Archan. “... I mean its ok if government thinks kids these days were waiting for their approval,” wrote Ankit Jain from @indiantweeter.

“The Indian Government has *AHA!*, lower the limit to have sex to 16 from 18. And guess what? Sex Education to 16 year olds is “BANNED,” read yet another remark, by Sushil @Ecclesiastesiac.

Others’ sarcasm pointed to a more serious problem.  “When the problem is about forced sex, Indian government decides to change the age for consensual sex,” wrote Gulfam Hassan on the microblogging site. “Defining the child in law: if a 16-year-old girl can give consent, why can't a 17½-year-old boy be charged with rape?” argued Genderlog India.
