'Want to have beautiful and successful daughter, join Indian Army'

Looks like the Indian Army doesn’t think that slogans like ‘Do you have it in you?’ and ‘Nation First’ can attract the country’s youth to join them. The army is now inviting people to join the force to have “a beautiful and successful” daughter. What most people initially thought was a morphed picture, turned out to be an actual billboard advertisement, for a career in the army, in Shillong.

The billboard has pictures of Bollywood actors, who are daughters of army officers, with text that reads, ‘If you want to have beautiful and successful daughter, join Indian army.’ The actors featured in the board include Gul Panag, Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra and Celina Jaitly.  As people tweeted that the ad was “stupid”, “glamourising the forces” and “bizzarre”, the board was taken off.

When we called the recruiting office on the number given on the billboard, an officer not wishing to reveal his identity told us that he was in charge of the billboard advertising, but was not aware of any such billboard in the city.

However army sources later confirmed that the billboard had been put up by local recruiters without approval from Army Headquarters. Actor Gul Panag, who is on that board, says, “I have no problem with it. People should not see negativity in this. I owe 150% of what I am to the armed forces — why do people make a whipping boy of it?”
