Campaigning for the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections on September 14 is on in full swing, and candidates are busy courting Lady Luck with all they can.
Freshers at Delhi University
“I wear a red band on my right wrist, which is my lucky charm. This is something I have always worn at important
occasions, and it’s always worked for me. Also, many us of us wear a white shirt with blue jeans because it has proved lucky for many. I have been wearing it too,” says Arun Hooda, presidential candidate for National Students Union of India (NSUI). Arun, who is a student of Law Centre, Faculty of Law, also had a short stint with the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot.
For Ankit Dhananjay Chaudhary, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s presidential candidate, it’s the right colour. “Orange and saffron are my lucky colours. Also, I always carry a stole (the kind used for religious occasions) during campaigning and keep thinking of God. I also wear a white shirt and blue jeans as it is considered lucky for candidates,” he says. Others have lucky mascots who accompany them as they make rounds of the campus. Raveena Chaudhary, NSUI’s candidate for the post of Joint Secretary, says, “I ensure that some my friends are always around me while I campaign. They are my lucky mascots.” Nikita Sinha, presidential candidate from All India Students Association (AISA), however, dismisses superstition: “I just believe in God, and sincere campaigning.”
