Acid causes severe physical, psychological and social scarring, and victims are often left with no legal recourse and limited access to medical or psychological assistance.
The government has offered to regulate the sale of acid but only after it was shaken out of its bureaucratic apathy by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court recently directed states and union territories to frame rules to regulate sale of acids and other corrosive substances within three months and make acid attack a non-bailable offence. State governments will have to pay Rs 3 lakh as compensation to an acid attack victim.
It is only one small step forward. The victims - mostly from poor families - cannot afford multiple surgeries. Few are willing to give them jobs.
If you are an acid attack victim, or if you know an acid attack victim, have your say and tell us your story.
