Spiritual leader Satya Sai Baba, who is on life support at a hospital in Puttaparthi town, is showing signs of improvement, hospital officials said on Tuesday.

Sai Baba was admitted to the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences at the pilgrim town in Anantapur district with lung infection and chest congestion on March 28.

“Sai Baba’s condition remains more or less the same as on Monday. However, his level of consciousness has considerably improved, and his vital systems are in a stable condition,” a medical bulletin released by the hospital said.

He continues to be on ventilator support and is receiving kidney dialysis, the update said.

Thousands of anxious devotees have been pouring in from different parts of the country as news of Sai Baba’s critical condition spread.

Tension gripped Puttaparthi on Monday when devotees tried to break into the hospital following reports that the Sai Baba was not responding to treatment.

The government has imposed prohibitory orders in Puttaparthi. Police check posts has been set up on all the entry and exit points of the town.

Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the law and order condition in the town at a high-level meeting.
