Normal life was hit in Kokrajhar district and its neighbouring areas by a 36-hour Assam Bandh called by the the All Koach Rajbangshi Students Union (AKRSU) from 5 am on Saturday. Markets, shops, educational institutions, offices and banks remained closed, while vehicles kept off the roads
and national highways in the Koach Rajbangshi dominated areas, official sources said.

Stating no untoward incident has been reported so far, the sources said that trains plied as usual.

The bandh was called to protest against the group clashes and burning down of houses and shops at Chautara in the district on Wednesday.

Trouble began when Muner Ali (27), allegedly in a relationship with a woman of the ethnic Koach Rajbongshi community, was beaten to death by people of her community.

In retaliation, the next day about 20 RajBongshi houses were set on fire and in a clash between the two sides some people suffered minor injuries, the sources said.

Again on Friday some people broke down two shops and AKRSU office and also injured two persons at Chitila Bazar area.

Even though the district administration has brought the situation under control and appealed the people to maintain peace and harmony, tension prevails in the area.
