Gogoi urges PM to revamp Brahmaputra Board

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to revamp the Brahmaputra Board so that it could take up measures to control the recurring problems of flood and erosion.

Gogoi, who called on the Prime Minister in New Delhi, said since Arunachal
Pradesh was opposing the constitution of the North East Water Resources Authority, the Brahmaputra Board had to be made effective so that it could take necessary measures to control floods and erosion which has eaten away nearly four lakh hectares of land so far.

The Prime Minister assured the chief minister that he would take up the matter in right earnest with the ministry of water resources, an official release said here.

Gogoi also discussed the ongoing peace talks with the ULFA and attempt by the Maoists to make inroads into the state and the north-east.

Gogoi also urged Singh to offer package to rehabilitate about 6,000 surrendered militants by providing skill development training for their employment.
