A 38-year-old man bludgeoned his eight-year-old daughter to death with a wooden rolling pin used to make ‘rotis’, in Bangalore West on Thursday night, as she had refused to live with her step-mother.

The man, identified as Sathyanarayana Singh, has been arrested. He was also arrested earlier in 2006 after his first wife Asha commited suicide, unable to bear mental and physical torture inflicted by Singh for dowry. Singh re-married after he was released on bail recently.

The girl’s step-mother, identified as Tejaswini, was also being questioned for allegedly instigating Singh against the minor. Sathyanarayana is also the father of a two-year-old son, born to his second wife.

Police said that eight-year-old Neha, a class 2 student in a private school, was forcibly brought by Singh from the custody of her grandparents who were looking after her since the death of her mother.

For the past two months, Neha was assaulted practically every day by her father and step-mother as she had wanted to go back to her grandparents in Shimoga district.

Deputy commissioner of police Y Rajappa said that on the fateful Thursday night, Singh locked up Neha in a room and hit her mercilessly with the rolling pin, leading to her instant death.

“He then tried to hide his crime by claiming that his daughter has died after being sexually assaulted by unknown people who had kidnapped her and then dumped her after committing the crime,” Rajappa said.

When police stepped up their interrogation, the remorseless father changed his version and claimed that she died after he beat her up for not studying. But police found this “story” to be too far-fetched like the previous version and continued to put pressure on Singh till he “broke down and confessed to his crime”.

“There was no issue of homework….no father would beat his daughter like that for not doing homework. The truth is that the girl was with her grandparents for the past seven years and she was not fond of her father and stepmother. She wanted to go back and this angered him,” Rajappa added.

The accused runs a plastic moulding factory near the Timber Yard Layout of the city and resides in the Byatarayanapura locality, a middle-class suburb.
