Accident claims 19 lives in Satna

Four vehicles rammed into each other one after the other near Maihar town of Satna district killing 19 people and injuring six on Monday morning.

According to the police, most of the casualties were in the jeep which was sandwiched in the collision. It rammed into a truck when another truck running behind it rammed into it. Another car also hit the vehicles. All the vehicles were running in a row towards Maihar.

The sub divisional officer of police PS Tekam said the indica car driver was overtaking the truck (UP 65-AR-8678) when he spotted a pothole on the road and applied the brake. As the driver lost control over the car, the truck driver also applied brake. As a result, the jeep (MP 19-C-8863) running behind the truck, rammed into it. The other truck laden with iron rods and on its way to Varanasi, rammed into the jeep killing its occupants.

As many as 15 people died on the spot. Four people died on their way to the hospital and six were injured. Those who died include women and children as well. Most of them belonged to Ajwain village under Budhera police station of Satna. The deceased were identified as Dileep Gupta, 30, his wife Archana, 25, their son Himanshu, 4, Kanti Kumar Shukla, 27, Bislai, 58, Gudia 32, Dhuni Bai, 44, Ramnaresh, 45, Binda, 45, Rajni Namdeo, 35, Gulabrani, 75, Nelam Kushwaha, 12, Rajeshwar Prasad, 35 and Ram, 23. Five people including a child are yet to be identified. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals and from there to Satna district hospital.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced Rs. 1 lakh compensation for the kin of deceased, Rs. 50,000 to the seriously injured and Rs. 10,000 to other injured passengers. He also instructed officials to make all the arrangements for the treatment of the injured.
