Three days after being sexually assaulted by three employees of the Sagar district hospital, a 25-year-old woman lost her baby daughter who was under treatment at the hospital, on Wednesday.
The two-year-old child had been admitted to the hospital -- about 200 km north-east of Bhopal - last week for treatment of severe burn injuries. She died on Tuesday night, while being transferred to a hospital in Bhopal.
On Saturday, the woman, who was at the hospital to attend to the child, was sexually assaulted by three Class IV employees. The men allegedly caught her when she had gone to the hospital toilet, threatened her with dire consequences, then thrashed her and raped her.
At the time, her husband had stepped out of the hospital. When he returned, she narrated the incident to him. The couple later went to the police outpost on the hospital premises and reported the matter.
The woman's husband told HT they had a tough time tracking down the culprits.
"I took her to the different wards in search of the men, but the search was fruitless," he said.
But on Monday, they came face to face with them.
"My wife instantly told me that they were the men who had assaulted her. As I approached them, they threatened and thrashed me. Then, we went to the Gopalgunj police station and lodged a report."
The men were later identified as contingency sweepers of the hospital - Rahul Valmiki, 23, Sunny, 25 Sachin, 35. Medical examination of the woman corroborated rape. The three sweepers have been arrested. The woman's husband is a carpenter and the couple has a five-year-old daughter.
The younger child was undergoing treatment at the hospital. As her condition had deteriorated, she was referred to Bhopal on Tuesday but she died on the way.
