Fed up of constant sexual harassment by a neighbour and with no help forthcoming from the police, a minor girl set herself on fire in her house in Nasrullahganj town in Sehore district, about 38 km from Bhopal, on Thursday.
The case comes two days after a Delhi court convicted the four accused in the brutal December 16 gang-rape case, which sparked protests and outrage across the nation.
The 17-year-old victim has received severe burns and her condition is critical. In her statement to the police, the victim said that her neighbor Sanjeev Yadav was harassing her for almost three months and on Thursday morning he tried to rape her. Fed up of the constant harassment, the girl set herself ablaze.
This case proved yet again that nothing has changed in India when it comes to safety of women. Neighbours of the girl said the man had been stalking the girl for the last three months and would pass lewd comments every time she stepped out of her house.
They said the girl’s family had complained to the police in the past but to no avail. Emboldened, the accused he tried to rape her on Thursday when she was alone at home. He fled after the girl shouted for help.
The girl has been rushed to Bhopal as she has suffered severe burn injuries. Town inspector CM Dwivedi said that the girl has said in her statement that the man was harassing her and today he entered the house and attempted to rape her, following which she attempted suicide.
The Nasrullahganj police have registered a case and Dwivedi said efforts are on to catch Yadav.
