Gas victims associated with Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan (BGPMUS) took out a rally on Tuesday to highlight failure of the chief minister to meet any of his promises made to gas victims following June 7, 2010, trial court verdict in the gas disaster criminal case which had led to huge public outrage all over the country.

Stating that it was the last rally of his oufit in Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s present regime, BGPMUS convener Abdul Jabbar said the chief minister had ‘betrayed’ the gas victims who reposed their faith in him and believed his words.

Accusing the chief minister of not fulfilling any of the promises made to gas victims, he said Chouhan had assured setting up of a special court for speedy disposal of Carbide trial, state government’s intervention in the petition filed for enhanced compensation to gas victims and streamlining the rehabilitation work being carried out for the gas victims, but nothing concerete was done in that direction.

Referring to a number of reminders he sent to the chief minister since 2010, he said they, too, failed to move the chief minister or his bureaucrats.

He said the memorandum submitted following demonstration on Tuesday was their last reminder to the chief minister for urgent action on their four outstanding demands: intervention of the state government on behalf of the gas victims in the petition filed before the Supreme Court for greater compensation to gas vicims, setting up of a special court to ensure appropriate punishment to Union Carbide officials acused in the Carbide case including then chairman, Union Carbide Corporation, Warren Anderson, review of rehabilitation programmes for gas victims to make them more effective and remediation of Carbide site.
