Jan Sangharsh Morcha activist Anurag Modi on Tuesday filed a habeaus corpus petition in MP high court contending that Narmada Bachao leader Medha Patkar has been illegally detained by Chhindwara police.

Counsel for Modi, Raghvendra Kumar said Patkar, who was detained a couple of days ago, has not been produced in the court so far and she was under a house arrest at the residence of advocate Aradhana Chaube in Chhindwara. The petition will come for hearing on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Medha continued to be on hunger strike on Tuesday. She has been on a fast ever since her arrest.

Patkar, along with 19 villagers, was detained after she arrived in Chhindwara to protest against bhoomi poojan of Adani group's power project at village Machagauda. Six thousand hectates of land has been allotted to Adani group for the project and people in 31 villages would be displaced due to it. Modi said that the land was given to state government for diversion project 22 years ago and at that time several laws, which are now in existence, did not exist. Even the Environment Protection Act was not in existence then, therefore allotment of land 22 years ago meant nothing now. Giving it for power project to a private group was all the more objectionable because the state government had received that land for irrigation project, he said.

Modi also expressed surprise at district collector clamping section 144 of the CrPC in the village, where bhoomi poojec for the project has taken place and said his order wreaked of British colonial rule as it barred all the outsiders from entering Chhindwara, Amarwada and Chaurai tehsils.

Anti-graft activist Anna Hazare has expressed annoyance over Medha Patkar' arrest and said he would come down to Chhindwara to join the agitation, if she was not immediately released, he said.
