A Naxalite who was arrested last year, escaped from the custody of police in Singrauli, 780 km east of Bhopal, on Thursday.

According to police sources, Kamal Hasan alias Qamruddin, had been caught along with another suspected Maoist in Singrauli on August 17, 2012. The police had then claimed that weapons were recovered from the duo and they were involved in extortion.

The police on Thursday were taking the duo-Kamal Hasan and Sanjay Khairwar to Chhattisgarh for a court hearing, when the former gave a slip to the police and escaped.

The incident occurred at Bargawan Bus stand in the wee hours of Thursday.

Sources said that the police were taking them in a bus to Chhattisgarh. The policemen stopped for tea at a place. The duo sensed opportunity and tried to escape. Though Khairwar was caught on the spot, Hasan managed to run away.

Hasan, who basically belongs to Jharkhand, has nearly half-a-dozen criminal cases registered against him in Chhattisgarh.

He was arrested after an exchange of fire in Mada police station in Singrauli last year. The local police have now launched a hunt to catch the absconder.
