Police cane charge Cong workers in Damoh, many hurt

A number of congress workers were injured when police resorted to cane charge on a crowd of protesters ahead of chief minister’s programme in the town on Sunday.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was scheduled to inaugurate 24X7 power supply to Damoh district besides unveiling statue of Rani Awanti Bai.

The Congress workers were protesting against shifting the statue from railway station square a place near cremation ground.

They were also accusing the state government of huge bungling in the implementation of Atal Jyoti campaign.

As they were passing through the venue of chief minister’s programme Tehsil ground with black flags in their hands, they were confronted by BJP and BJYM workers.

Amidst clash between the two groups, the police resorted to cane charge, injuring a number of Congress workers, some of them seriously.

Some policemen were also injured in incident and district superintendent of Police AK Pandey is also said to have sustained injuries in the violence.

Following the incident, Congressmen accused Siddartha, son of water resource minister Jayant Malaiya, of orchestrating the violence in connivance with police.

AJAY SINGH CONDEMNS LATHI CHARGE
Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Ajay Singh has condemned the police lathi charge over congress worker in Damoh district during the chief minister’s visit. Not only the policemen, but members of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha and Bhartiya Janta Party were also involved in bashing up the peaceful Congress workers, he further alleged.

Ajay Singh said that the Congress workers were simply protesting against corruption in Atal Jyoti campaign and shifting of Rani Awanti Bai’s statue against the wishes of the people of Damoh.

He also referred to alleged insult of Congress MLA Imarti Devi at chief minister’s function in Bhind district and said the chief minister was behaving like a dictator and not democratically elected chief minister as every voice of protest against his government is sought to be throttled by his administration and the party.

Congress MLA from Punjab KS Dhillo will arrive here on Monday as All India Congress Committee (AICC) observer to consult the local leaders on the candidature for the seven assembly seats in Bhopal.

After holding discussions with the local leaders for two days, he will go to Sehore for consultation with local leaders there for the Sehore seat.

District Congress president, MP, MLAs, former ministers, former MPs and MLAs, former district Congress presidents, presidents of party’s front organisations, mayors or presidents of municipalities, corporators, AICC members, district council president and state Congress vice-president in- charge of administration and general secretaries will be the main participants in the consultation.

On Monday, he will hold consultations for Narela, Bhopal (north), Bhopal (central) and Bhopal (south-west) seats. Next day, he will have discussions for Govindpura, Huzur, Bairasia and Sehore assembly seats.
