A woman journalist of a local TV channel was stumped when Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav called her “beautiful” in reply to a question during a press conference in Bhopal on Tuesday.

The journalist asked Yadav which state he preferred —Bihar or Madhya Pradesh.

In reply, a smiling Yadav said, “Bihar, Madhya Pradesh… entire India is beautiful. You are beautiful too.”

Yadav has studied engineering at Jabalpur and represented it in the Lok Sabha in late 1970s, but now represents the Madhepura constituency of Bihar in the Lower House of Parliament, and the journalist had asked the question in this context.

Reacting to Yadav’s remark, state Congress spokesperson Abhay Dubey said the manner in which it was said was “not a genuine compliment”.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Pramod Pradhan said there was nothing wrong in what Yadav said, “but people in public life should be more discreet”.

A woman resident of the Race Course area had complained to the government about the BJP leader who also owns a hotel at Tyagi Road.

Party spokesperson Mukesh Mahindra said such acts were intolerable and the party had the greatest regard for women.

“We will look into the matter and take necessary action,” he said.
