An undertrial pregnant inmate of Indore district jail on Tuesday morning made an unsuccessful attempt to end her life by hanging self with a dupatta ( scarf ) in prison's bathroom.
District jail authorities said they came to know about the incident after female inmates in the women's ward raised an alarm. Hearing the commotion, jail officials and other jail inmates rushed to the spot and took the woman out of bathroom. While coming out of the bathroom, she smashed her forehead on walls and injured herself. The jail officials immediately rushed her to the MY Hospital where her situation is said to be out of danger.
Haleema, the under trial inmate is lodged at Indore district jail on charges of killing her husband by setting him on fire at their Azad Nagar residence under Sanyogitaganj police station. She hails from Mandsaur and had allegedly killed her husband after he tried to push her into flesh trade.
Haleema, along with one more under trial inmate had sought permission for abortion. The other woman has also been booked on charges of killing her husband. There are 130 female inmates in the jail.
Speaking to HT, jailor of district jail Ranjeet Singh Bhatti confirmed that Haleema is one-and-half-month pregnant and had verbally sought permission for abortion during a routine parade on December 1. "Later, she submitted a written request as well," said Bhatti.
He further added that Haleema came to district jail on November 22. " She has three kids and has expressed her desire for abortion," said the jailor.
"On Monday, Haleema went to the court for trial and it is just possible that some females inmates might have provoked her. She also suffers from epilepsy," Bhatti added.
