The police on Monday arrested three persons for allegedly gangraping a Dalit woman a day earlier in Odisha’s Cuttack district.
The incident triggered outrage in the area with locals blocking a state highway demanding action against the culprits and free medical care and compensation for the victim.
The three accused accosted the 28-year-old divorcee on Sunday afternoon when she was working alone at the small vegetable farm owned by her parents on the outskirt of their village, about 30 km east of Bhubaneswar. They dragged her to a secluded place and raped her, the police said.
Villagers found the unconscious woman in a critical condition in the evening, informed the police and admitted her in the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
“There are serious injury marks on her private parts indicating that she was raped by more than one person. We immediately started a search operation and arrested 38-year-old Gundicha Samal, 26-year-old Abhaya Pradhan and 30-year-old Krupasindhu Jena,” said sub divisional police officer Ramesh Panigrahi.
The accused persons are engaged in local liquor trade.
