Five men who robbed a woman schoolteacher in Bhojpur district of south-central Bihar found that they had bitten off more than they could chew.

Alerted by Priti Kumari, students, mostly girls, of her school intercepted the fleeing robbers and caught four of them in Thursday’s incident. They also seized a country made pistol, five live cartridges and a mobile phone from their possession.

Confirming the incident Bhojpur SP MR Nayak said, “The girls also seized the motorcycles. They would be felicitated at the Sonepur fair to be held later this year.”

Kumari was going home on her scooty when the five men on two motorcycles intercepted her. They snatched her gold chain, ear rings and cash, but “the robbers’ failure to take away her mobile proved to be their undoing”, said a police official. “The victim alerted the school authorities as the men headed in that direction... the waiting girl students pounced on them,” said the SP.

Later, the police arrested the four robbers, but the fifth managed to flee. “The spirit shown by the girls is truly commendable,” Nayak added.

Nitish’s judoka push

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has mooted the idea of bringing every school under martial arts umbrella. “The state will ensure judo and karate training to every schoolgirl so that they can master the art of self-defence,” he said in Patna.
