Pakistan is trying to take advantage of the unrest in the Kashmir Valley by stepping up infiltration attempts from across the Line of Control during the last two months, said army chief Gen V.K. Singh. Speaking to reporters after the passing-out parade at the Officers Training School on
Saturday, Gen Singh said, “There can be a method in Pakistan’s attempt to exploit the situation.”

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi recently “urged” India to stop human rights violations in Kashmir. He was rebuffed on Friday by Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna, saying the Kashmir unrest was India’s internal matter.

Making a pitch for the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, he said the Act was vital for the army to function in this situation, since it was neither arbitrary nor unconstitutional, as the Supreme Court had already ruled.

Stating that the army had “told the ministry of defence whatever the army has to say”, he said the Centre will surely take a correct decision on the issue.

On the increased presence of Chinese forces in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, he said: “We are watching it. If it becomes a matter of concern, we’ll go back to the government.”
