Sticking to the austerity drive launched by his Ministry, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday travelled to Chennai by economy class, airport sources in Chennai said.

Pranab is in the city to participate in a function where he is scheduled to release a commemorative coin on DMK founder, late C N Annadurai.

After the controversy over five-star stays by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor, Finance Ministry had imposed austerity measures that included guidelines to ministers that they travel economy class on domestic and internal flights.

UPA Chairperson and AICC president Sonia Gandhi had on Monday travelled by economy class to Mumbai. Taking a cue from his mother, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday travelled to Ludhiana in the chair car of Shatabdi Express.
