Dr Binayak Sen, sentenced to life imprisonment for sedition by a court in Chhattisgarh, is in solitary confinement in Raipur Central jail, his wife Ilina Sen said on Monday.

She met him in jail for the first time after he was taken into custody after the verdict on December 24.

The Sen family has started preparations for the legal fight to free him. "We are working on the strategy for appeal which would be made after the Chhattisgarh high court reopens (after vacation) on January 3," Ilina told HT.

The verdict against Sen was based on, among other evidences, help to "hardcore" Naxalites Shanker Singh and Amita Srivastava open bank accounts, get jobs and house on rent.

Ilina said she and her husband helped Singh and Srivastava but did not know they were hardcore Naxalites, as police claimed.

Incidentally, though Chhattisgarh police has branded Singh and Srivastava "hardcore" Naxalites, it has no records against them to link them to crimes.

Ram Niwas, additional director general of police (anti-Maoists operation), Chhattisgarh, said it was not necessary that a hardcore Maoist should have a case registered against him/her.

"Hardcore is not defined by law. Anyone strongly influenced by an ideology that gets repeated reflection in action of a person can be cited as hardcore," the ADG said.
