Acting on a tip-off, a combined team of the district police force and the CAF undertook a combing operation in the forested areas of the district. Maoists opened fire on the patrol party near the jungles of Jharaghati, around 25km from the district headquarters, killing three jawans of CAF 16 battalion.

"The security forces retaliated, but a head constable and two constables were killed on the spot. We have also recovered the body of a Maoist who is yet to be identified," said Narayanpur superintendent of police Amit Tukaram Kambley.

Additional forces were sent to the spot. Police said other rebels too might have been killed in the encounter, but their bodies could not be recovered.
