Police have arrested a student, and are searching for his brother who is absconding, on charges of raping his girlfriend in Bhopa village of Muzaffarnagar district.

The girl has complained to the police that Satendra and his brother Vinod abducted her and took turns to rape her.

But according to many villagers, Satendra and the girl are studying at a college in Muzaffarnagar and got married at Arya Samaj Mandir in May this year.

But the girl’s family, which is against their marriage, asked the panchayat to annul the marriage and extract an apology from Satendra’s father, who flatly refused to do so.

The villagers said the family then pressurised the girl to implicate the brothers in a rape case.
