Many students are hoping to get a seat in Delhi University's top courses but some are choosing their interest over well-known programmes. Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) offered by the College of Art is a choice for students who are interested in making a career in arts and aesthetics. The College of Art is the only college under Delhi University offering BFA.
In the first five days, the college has sold over 955 admission forms and prospectus. The applicants will have to undergo an aptitude test to secure admission. As much as 60% of the weightage will be given to the aptitude test results and 40% to the marks secured in Class 12.
Students welcomed the idea of an exam to judge a candidate's potential. "For BFA, it is essential that students are judged in terms of their work. Marks hold no value for this course. Hence, an entrance exam is the best idea," said Ashish Sukhija from Pratap Nagar who scored 60% in his Class 12 examination.
Students and parents stressed the fact that pursuing interest is more important than choosing popular courses. "My daughter is a science student and has secured good marks but she is interested only in BFA. If she doesn't make it this year, she'll work on her skills and apply next year," said Vijayrani Gupta from Dwarka. Another applicant, Kritika Narula, is applying only for this course.
Principal of the college, SN Lahiri, said it was important for the candidates to be involved with the art world. "This is a creative course. Students need to have a certain set of skills for this course. This course at our college offers the much-needed exposure to the students," Lahiri added.
Students are expected to mention their choice of specialisation area. The college offers specialisations in art history, applied art, painting, print making, sculpture and visual communication.
The sale and submission of the application forms is on till June 22. Students can send in their application forms through registered post or courier by June 25. The aptitude test will be held on July 2.
