It's IAS versus IPS at this year's Gymkhana Club elections.

Top bureaucrats - serving and retired - from the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) will lock horns with top officials from the Indian Police Services (IPS) for the post of the club president. The elections for the post will be held on September 27.

Traditionally, every two years, the Gymkhana Club - a favourite with the city's power elite - opens up this contest for members belonging to the civil services. The post goes back to members from the defence services for the next two terms.

This year, fighting for the top slot are Union road secretary Vijay Chhibber, retired IPS officer and former chief of Research & Analysis Wing AS Dulat, retired Director General of Police BL Vohra and retired Indian Information Services officer Urmila Gupta.

If Gupta wins, she will create history by becoming the first woman president of the 100-year-old club. Presently of the club's 5600 permanent members, women number only 320.

"This is also the first time that four members are in the fray. It's going to be a keenly contested fight," said a club member.

With polls drawing near, high-voltage campaign with innumerable parties and meetings are being organised. Some candidates have appointed their election agent; for others such as Gupta, social networking sites has come in handy. She has posted her poll agenda on Facebook.

But like Dulat, an old-timer and a former club president, said in his letter for support, "Ours is a gentleman's club, the very best in the country and this is only an election and a friendly one. Hopefully not a Mahabharat as some people are suggesting."
