If you are looking to buy imported liquor, chances are your favourite brands will not be available in the market.
A large number of popular foreign liquor brands - including single malt and blended whiskeys, vodka, wine and champagne - are missing from Delhi's liquor stores. Owners of liquor shops in Delhi - both government-run and private ones - complain this has been the case for almost three weeks now and has severely dented their businesses.
Not just imported foreign liquor, but some of the highest selling Indian-made foreign liquor brands are also unavailable, they complained.
Ashutosh Banerjee, an IT professional who came to buy liquor at a liquor store at Connaught Place, said it was the fourth store he came to looking for his favourite brands. "I am hosting a small party to celebrate our first wedding anniversary this weekend. But most of the popular brands not available in market. I'll have to postpone the party," he said.
Excise department officials accepted that some brands are currently unavailable but hoped the problem will be sorted in couple of days. "We renew the licences of liquor importers every year. After the excise policy for 2013-14 was announced, we again invited applications from importers. While one importer was given the licence two days ago, the process to grant licence to another importer is on. These companies will stock all the shops soon," a senior excise department official said.
