The South Delhi Municipal Corporation's waste disposal fleet is getting stronger as out of the 80 new trucks to be procured by the civic body, 40 are already on their way.

Though most of the collection from the localities to the SLF sites is supposed to be done by a private concessioner, regular complaints of irregular garbage disposal has forced the corporation to take this step, a source said.

South commissioner Manish Gupta told Hindustan Times the first lot from Jamshedpur has started off. "Once they are here, we won't have to remain completely dependent on the concessioner. We will pick up the garbage from wherever required and we will fine them by deducting the amount from their fees. We won't have to run after them once our fleet is here. And the people won't have to suffer," Gupta said.

In South and Central zones of the civic body, Delhi Waste Management is the concessioner employed while in West zone, Delhi Metro Waste is entrusted with the task of transporting the garbage. The garbage management of rural Najafgarh zone is done by the corporation's staff and machinery.

"Out of the 80 trucks, 50 will be assigned for Najafgarh zone. The rest will be there for the three other zones and will be available according to requirement," the commissioner said.

The corporation already has 375 newly-acquired garbage collecting rickshaws, 218 auto tippers, 47 trucks and 10 loaders in its waste disposal fleet other than the machinery used by the concessioners.
