The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has claimed that top BJP leaders — especially chief ministerial hopefuls — have been sending feelers to pledge support to the upstart party.

The over a year-old party — making its political debut in Delhi’s Assembly polls — has claimed that seven sitting members of the legislative Assembly (MLAs) have offered to join AAP. The party consulted its volunteer base and conducted an online poll, asking whether these MLAs should be admitted to the party fold.

The AAP will contest all 70 seats in the forthcoming elections in Delhi and named 40-odd candidates.

The party has claimed that four of the six CM hopefuls from the opposition BJP in Delhi are in touch with it.

“Four of the six CM hopefuls from the BJP are in touch with Arvind, with the party… they have been sending feelers through various channels,” Manish Sisodia, AAP spokesperson, told HT on Thursday.

“Each of them, separately, has pledged support to AAP if he/she is not projected as the chief ministerial candidate (by the BJP),” he added.

Thursday saw the party putting up on its Facebook page several photographs of leaders, reportedly from the Congress, the BJP and other political parties. “The party has done a background check of these people to make sure that none of them have any criminal background,” the party announced.

BJP’s Vijay Goel rubbished the claim and said: “They are free to say anything.... Even few of their leaders are in touch with us.”
