Congress on Wednesday demanded a special package for drought-hit Jharkhand and called for effective implementation of welfare schemes in the state.
Leading a party delegation to Raj Bhavan, Jharkhand PCC president Pradeep Kumar Balmachu apprised Governor K Sankaranarayan of various problems in view of the drought and submitted a memorandum demanding speedy solution to them, a Raj Bhavan release said here.
The memorandum demanded a special package for Jharkhand, which is facing unprecedented drought, and urged the Governor to declare Palamau division, a rain shadow region, as famine-hit.
The Congress also requested the Governor to effectively carry out the public distribution system, NREGA, old-age pension scheme and ensure availability of electricity, drinking water and other welfare projects, the release added.
