The five accused arrested on Saturday, in connection with a robbery at a Reliance Mart store, had planned the crime almost two months ago and done complete recce of the retail outlet, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

According to the police, the accused chose to wear loose kurta-pyjama and put tiger masks on their faces to escape physical identity. The police said that Rajesh Kumar, a St Stephen’s College student and the mastermind in the robbery case, had planned it to be a “designer robbery”.

“While planning for the crime along with his brother and two other accomplices almost two months ago, Rajesh had done every little preparation to ensure that no trail of the crime was left behind,”said Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal.

The police said that Rajesh was a bright student and scored above 90 per cent all through his academic career. He is tech-savvy and very fond of luxury life.

The accused, who looted expensive electronic items from the store on the night of June 9, had done a thorough internet research and ground work for the crime.

“He not only sprayed foam on lens of the CCTV cameras at the store so that the clear footage could not be recorded, he had plans to go into the mart’s main server and delete all the footage of that day to avoid any identification,” said inspector Jasbeer Punia of the cyber crime cell.

“The fact that his elder brother Kuldeep worked at the store helped him do a good recce of the place,”said Punia.

Another senior officer who is part of the investigating team said, “Rajesh would always assure his accomplices that police could never have a clue of who committed the crime as his plan was foolproof.”
