The city police on Saturday busted a gang of thieves, including an auto driver, who robbed people travelling in shared auto-rickshaws. The police also seized mobile phones and cash.

The accused have been taken into two-days’ police remand after being produced in the court on Sunday morning. The accused have been identified as Kamal Negi from Delhi, Pappu from Uttar Pradesh and Rahul Paswan from Bihar.

According to the police, Negi, the mastermind and prime accused, has been driving an auto in Gurgaon for the past two years.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to their crimes and revealed their modus operandi. The men would travel in auto-rickshaws with passengers from bus stops, railway stations and Iffco Chowk on the pretext of sharing the fare. Finding an isolated location, they would rob the victim. The gang also assaulted passengers if they resisted, police said.

“The crime branch of the Sector 17 police station tracked the accused through mobile surveillance,” said Rajesh Duggal, DCP (crime).
