Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) district president Ramesh Dahiya was attacked by a group of miscreants led by a gangster who has been out of jail on parole for the past one week, the police said on Tuesday.

According to police, Sunil alias Tota is involved in more than a dozen criminal cases and he has been jailed several times. He attacked the 46-year-old leader on Monday evening to settle old scores. He has been booked under Arms Act.

"We are conducting an inquiry into it. Prima facie, it seems the attack was politically motivated as the accused wanted to take revenge of his defeat in MCG ward councillor election held in 2011," said Vijender Hooda, SHO Rajender Park police station.

The police are yet to arrest anyone in the case but Dahiya and his supporters have been demanding immediate action.

We are not satisfied with the police action. They (the attackers) broke my car's window pan and abused me and my family. We called the police but they did not come. When we gathered a few people in my favour to meet the SHO, Sunil and his accomplices attacked us. My niece got injured in the attack. They vandalized my house and fired bullet as well," Dahiya alleged.

Dahiya helped an INLD candidate who won the MCG ward councillor's election held in 2011.
